Having A Really Hot Summer? Tips For Preventing An AC Failure

Ricardo Sanchez

The reason you have an air conditioner is to help cool down your home on those very hot days during the summer. However, it's possible that your air conditioner will fail at a time where you'll want to use it the most. Here are a few tips that will help you avoid an untimely air conditioner failure.

Inspect The Air Conditioner Annually

One thing that many homeowners fail to do is have their air conditioner inspected with any sort of regularity. They tend to ignore the air conditioner until it breaks, which can cause a panic as you pay for emergency service to have it repaired right away. The best thing that you can do is schedule an air conditioner inspection at a time when it is not very hot outside. This is likely a time when HVAC service technicians will not be busy, and you won't have to pay a premium for them to come out to your home. You can also have the work scheduled at your convenience since the air conditioner will not be in use.

Clean The Air Conditioner Condenser

That outdoor condenser may be designed to withstand all sorts of weather conditions. However, that doesn't mean that you can completely ignore the condenser. It does need to be cleaned when the unit is dirty. Visually inspect the condenser to see if there is any debris stuck in the fins and clean it out if necessary. This will prevent the condenser from overheating and breaking down prematurely.

Change The Air Filter

Anything you can do with preventing stress on the air conditioner is going to prolong its lifespan and prevent the need for repair. This includes something as simple as changing the air filter. Having a clean air filter is going to allow the air to pass through easily. You'll notice that your air conditioner is on for less time to cool your home due to not having any obstructions, and the air will be cleaner as a result.

Use The Programmable Thermostat

Make sure you take advantage of the programmable features of your thermostat so that you are not overworking your air conditioner. Make sure to set up a schedule so that the air conditioner shuts down when you're away at work during the day, and then turns on right before you come home. If you are leaking on vacation for a while, don't forget to turn off your air conditioner or put the temperature around 80°F to make sure your home doesn't get too hot.
