Tips For Handling An Air Conditioner That Isn't Cooling Your House Enough

Ricardo Sanchez

If your home has been feeling too warm lately, then there might be something wrong with your air conditioner. There are a number of causes that could be to blame, but it can be pretty difficult to figure out which is which, particularly if you aren't too experienced in working on your HVAC. To help you out with this, here are some of the most common reasons why your home might be feeling warmer than usual during the summer:

Air Duct Issues

First of all, your problem might have nothing to do with your air conditioner at all. Instead, there might be some sort of blockage in your air ducts that is preventing the cold air from being distributed throughout your home.

Troubleshooting such a problem can be difficult, but not impossible. The first thing that you want to do is check and see which rooms are getting cold air and which are not. If the entire home is affected, then the problem is either in the air conditioner or in the air ducts before any forks in the ventilation.

If some rooms are affected and some are not, then you can assume that the blockage is fairly deep in the ventilation. If only one room is affected, the blockage might be easily accessible from that room's vent cover.

In any event, you should probably call a professional unless you can easily reach the blockage yourself. You don't want to open up your walls and ventilation unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

Too Much Dirt in Your Air Conditioner

On the other hand, you might just be dealing with a bit of dirt in your air conditioner. If you haven't been properly maintaining your AC, then dirt and debris can build up fairly quickly. This can ultimately reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner, since those materials can absorb heat. This prevents your AC from venting heat waste, which increases the overall temperature of your air conditioner. In turn, this forces the AC to work harder to generate cold air.

It's fairly easy to fix this problem, since you really just need to clean out your air conditioner from time to time. You will probably need a screwdriver to open the AC, along with a vacuum that has a hose attachment. Clean out all of the obvious dirt, try to keep any foliage and dirt away from the AC in general, and repeat the process once a month during summer.
